Nosy Fanihy: what you need to know
The flying foxes of Nosy Fanihy
The Madagascar flying fox (Pteropus rufus) is a fruit-eating bat with a wingspan that can exceed 1 metre. On Nosy Fanihy, several hundred individuals nest in the trees of the coastal forest. As diurnal creatures, they can be observed throughout the day. They play a vital role in the pollination of Madagascan fruit trees.
A sacred island
For the Malagasy people, Nosy Fanihy is a fady island – sacred and subject to taboos. No permanent structures are permitted there. Your guide will explain the island’s cultural significance and the rules to follow during your visit. An experience that goes far beyond beach tourism.
