Beyond the fishing villages, Nosy Be reveals its landscapes: the panoramic views from Mount Passot, the sacred lakes, the ylang-ylang plantations with their lingering fragrance, and Hell-Ville, the colonial capital. Our 10-seater Toyota Starex will take you on a tour of the island from north to south, accompanied by a local guide who will tell you about Malagasy traditions, history and daily life.

Places of interest on Nosy Be Island

What you need to know

Hell-Ville, the island’s administrative centre

As the capital of Nosy Be, Hell-Ville retains its colonial architecture along the harbour and the central market. It is the hub for services, banks and crafts. Its proximity to the harbour makes it the departure point for connections to the mainland.

Mount Passot and the sacred lakes

From the summit, the view stretches across the entire archipelago. The crater lakes surrounding the mountain are sacred to the Malagasy people: fishing and swimming are strictly forbidden. Your guide will explain the fady (taboos) associated with these places.

Ylang-ylang – the scent of Nosy Be

Nosy Be is nicknamed ‘the island of perfumes’ for its ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) plantations. This yellow flower is distilled to produce a precious essence used in perfumery worldwide. A visit to an artisanal distillery immerses you in this ancestral local craft.

Lemuria Land

Set within a former ylang-ylang plantation, Lemuria Land park allows visitors to observe several species of lemurs endemic to Madagascar in semi-freedom. The trail also passes through reptile enclosures, including chameleons and Nile crocodiles. The visit usually includes a tour of the historic still used for distilling essential oils.
